Organiker finally got it in the comments, and a couple of other folks guessed correctly on twitter. What Am I? this week was in fact paper (the top two chemicals, calcium sulfate and cellulose – the calcium sulfate is used to finish the paper) and ink (a calligraphy ink, composition taken from: José-Yacamán et al. ‘The Chemical Composition of Fountain Pen Ink’ http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ed083p1476).
As people are quite unfamiliar with the process of making ink, here’s a longish video on how to make ink using some of the chemicals that appeared in What Am I?
PS – drowning in marking and pre-semester prep at the moment, more substantial content next week!
